Newborn Health Insurance Reminders
From the entire staff at Wee Pediatrics, Inc., congratulations on the newest member of your family! During the hectic time that follows the birth of a child, new parents may not know, or may forget that babies are not automatically covered on all insurance plans. Below is some important information to remember:
- Not all insurance policies offer automatic coverage for new babies. However, some plans give a 30 to 31-day grace period until you can add baby to your plan.
- We recommend that you check with your insurance carrier, HR department or member services to understand your health plan/benefits, and to start the process of adding your baby to your insurance plan.
- If the newborn coverage period has ended, and your baby is not showing as active under the insurance plan, you'll be financially responsible for the visit. This may also lead to a lapse of coverage for your child.
- For HMSA HMO, and HMSA QUEST plans: one of our providers must be the assigned PCP (currently only Myrtle Parel, APRN is accepting new patients).
- For Tricare Prime plans: either Myrtle Parel, APRN or Dr. Jordan Arakawa, must be assigned as the PCM (Primary Care Manager).
- All other HMO and Quest Plans: one of our providers must be the assigned PCP.
1st Visit Checklist: 3 to 5 days old
✅ What to bring
Picture ID and Insurance card
✅ Immunizations
Your baby will receive the Hepatitis B (HBV) vaccine if they did not receive it in the hospital. (The AAP recommends newborns receive their first dose of vaccine within the first 24 hours of birth.)
✅ Screenings
Your provider will review the results of two screenings that all babies receive in the hospital for hearing and blood. Based on the results, your provider may rescreen or recommend a referral to a specialist. (This typically is done no later than the 1-month-old well visit)
✅Development & feeding
Your provider will measure and weigh your baby to make sure their growth is on track, observe their development and behavior, and perform a physical exam.
✅ Communication
Never hesitate to call our office with any questions or concerns—even if you know the office is closed. If the provider is unable to see you but believes your baby should be examined, they will advise you on the most appropriate place for your baby to receive care and how quickly your baby should be seen.
